A woman has died and a man has been seriously injured following a shark attack at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, New South Wales. The incident occurred early on Thursday morning, around 6.30 am local time, while the pair, both in their 20s, were swimming in the water. Emergency services were alerted to the scene shortly after the attack. Despite the efforts of bystanders who provided immediate assistance, the woman tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The man, however, was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in critical condition, where he has since stabilised to serious but stable. NSW Ambulance Superintendent Joshua Smyth praised the actions of a bystander who applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man's leg, stating, "[That] potentially saved his life." Authorities believe a large bull shark was responsible for the attack. Forensic analysis conducted by the Department of Primary Industries supports this conclusion. In response to the incident, five smart drumlines have been deployed at Kylies Beach, which is currently closed to swimmers. Drones are also being used to monitor the area for any further shark activity. The beach, known for its remote and unpatrolled nature, is a popular spot for camping and fishing. Surf Life Saving NSW has urged the public to stay clear of the water and follow the guidance of lifeguards. This incident marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Just months earlier, a man was killed by a great white shark at Long Reef Beach in Sydney. Data from the Australian Shark Incident Database indicates that while shark bites have increased in recent years, fatalities have decreased per capita due to improved emergency response and first aid training. Experts suggest that the rise in shark encounters may be linked to various factors, including coastal population growth, climate change, and increased water sports activity. A report is being prepared for the coroner as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. The community is mourning the loss of the woman, and condolences have been extended to the families affected by this tragic event.
