Rachel Reeves has said the UK Government will not agree to another Scottish independence referendum even if the SNP wins a majority at Holyrood in 2026.

Pressed on BBC Radio Scotland over whether Labour would respect what First Minister John Swinney says would be a mandate for a fresh vote, the Chancellor was unequivocal.

“I can be very clear — there will not be another referendum,” she said. “When there was a referendum just a few years ago, they said this was a once-in-a-generation referendum. People gave their verdict then; we do not need another one.”

Asked how long she believed a generation was, Ms Reeves said it was “certainly not 12 years”.

She insisted the Scottish Government should focus instead on priorities such as waiting lists and educational outcomes.
