Metrolink trams were stopped and searched by police officers on Thursday morning after reports of a man armed with a knife on board.

A 17-year-old boy was later arrested at Northern Moor tram stop, Wythenshawe. The teenager remained in custody today to be questioned on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of a bladed article.

One witness said they were ordered off a tram by police at the Firswood stop in Stretford, Trafford.

GMP said officers initially responded to reports of a man with a knife on Moor Road in Wythenshawe. He was said to have got on board a tram at the stop on the road.

The Bee Network reported 'minor' delays to services on the Didsbury-Rochdale and Manchester Airport line due to a 'police incident'.
