The Department for Work and Pensions could potentially "debank" Universal Credit recipients under new powers that permit staff to scrutinise bank accounts. However, MPs are cautioning the Labour Party government that algorithmic surveillance could ensnare millions of innocent benefit claimants in undesired investigations.
The Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Accountability) Bill allows government departments to request information from banks on claimants. Critics, however, contend these measures equate to "mass fishing" operations. Liberal Democrats work and pensions spokesman Steve Darling has cautioned the government against a "blanket approach".
