Canadian Identity and Culture Minister Steven Guilbeault is quitting cabinet over the federal government signing Thursday’s memorandum of understanding with Alberta, according to a source with knowledge of his decision.

Thursday’s agreement between Ottawa and Alberta includes a path forward for a new bitumen pipeline to the B.C. coast.

Guilbeault will stay on as a Liberal MP, the source said.

The Quebec MP was first elected in 2019 and previously held a few cabinet positions under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, including the environment and climate change portfolio.
