In just four hours at four Saugeen Shores locations first responders collected 3,258 lb. of food and $4,391 cash donations for the Salvation Army Food Bank during the annual first responders community food/toy drive Nov. 22.
First responders – fire, police – helped by Special Olymnpaibns – and paramedics, collected donations at Southampton Foodland, and Canadian Tire, Vanderwerf’s Grocer and WalMart in Port Elgin. They were trucked to the Salvation Army HQ, weighed and recorded, ready to be distributed. Article content
At least 35 years ago, the first food/toy drive was organized by Southampton firefighters and expanded to include Port Elgin firefighters about 26 years ago. In recent years paramedics, police and Special Olympians joined the event.
