A violent street thief who punched a woman was tracked down after police followed a trail of banknotes behind him.
The thief fled after snatching a bag containing €5,800 (£5,000) in cash a woman had won in a local casino . Officers raced to the scene in Alicante after receiving reports that a woman was being chased by a man.
The female victim had been punched in the nose and when police went to help, she pointed out the direction in which her attacker had fled .
She told them she was walking to her hotel in Alicante city centre after leaving a gaming saloon. A man started up a conversation with her and asked her for a cigarette.
