SAN FRANCISCO — A 2-year-old wolverine at the San Francisco Zoo became the first of his kind to have a custom-made artificial lens implanted in his eye .

Edward the wolverine had a cataract surgery after his caretakers noticed his right eye was cloudy . Cataracts are a "clouding of the lens of the eye" that can impact vision, according to the Mayo Clinic. Animals and humans can get cataracts, but are typically much older than Edward when they develop.

"We were surprised to see what appeared to be a cataract forming in the eye of such a young animal," said Dr. Nick Dannemiller, clinical veterinarian at the zoo. "So, we called an ophthalmologist to further evaluate Edward’s condition."
