HINCKLEY, Ohio (WOIO) - For 36 years, Thanksgiving morning in Hinckley has meant one thing: the Meadows Turkey Bowl.
What began as a casual backyard game between friends has grown into a beloved community tradition — and a major fundraiser for brain cancer research.
From backyard game to community tradition, Mike Meadows, who started the Turkey Bowl as a simple way for neighbors to connect, says the event has taken on a purpose far beyond a friendly scrimmage.
“They have all come together as a family to give back to the community,” he said. Players still show at sunrise, but now they do it knowing every play helps someone in need.
The event’s mission became deeply personal in 2020, when Meadows’ son, Pete, was diagnosed with oligodendroglioma, a rare form of brain cancer.
