Ralph Rottmanâs Christmas tree roots run deep â three generations deep.
His grandfather planted the first sapling on Windy Hills Farm in Tuscarawas Township in 1938. At 85, Rottman is now the owner of the tree farm. Naturally, after nearly seven decades of growing, cutting and selling evergreens, Rottman knows a thing or two about picking the right tree and keeping it green for the holidays.
First and foremost, there is no such thing as the perfect tree.
âThe beauty is in the eye of the beholder,â Rottman said. âI see people pick trees that I thought about scrapping.â
Fan favorite species at Windy Hills include Fraser fir and Canaan fir, prized for short needles and strong retention. White pine, with its long needles, is another popular choice.
