Dozens of residents at two Thorncliffe Park highrises are unable to return to their homes Friday morning after a “complex” fire continues to burn within the insulation of the apartment buildings, resulting in high carbon monoxide levels.

In an update at the scene in the area of Thorncliffe Park Drive and Overlea Boulevard, officials said 70 hotel rooms have been provided to the 114 residents who were forced to evacuate their units as the blaze spread Thursday afternoon and into the night.

“What we thought would have been a normal fire for us to put out has turned out to be one of the more complex fire situations we have had in a long time in this city,” said Toronto fire Chief Jim Jessop, adding that more than 77 fire trucks were deployed to battle the blaze.
