Armstrong Williams and I agree on one thing and it’s that capitalism is far superior to socialism as an economic model ( “Armstrong Williams: Socialism is the equal sharing of misery,” Nov. 25), but there is room for a hybrid economic model.

Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden are countries that have mixed economies based on market capitalism and a universal welfare state, often called the “Nordic model,” which features free-market principles, private ownership and competition, but also a strong social safety net. The model is closer to social democracy than to socialism.

Williams strays in holding up Cuba, Venezuela, China, North Korea and Russia as examples of failed socialist countries. Rather, they are examples of authoritarian states or military dictatorships.
