A 3-year-old girl was killed and multiple other people were critically injured in a Thanksgiving Day crash in northern Macomb County, according to Michigan State Police.

The incident took place about 5:20 p.m. on M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue) near Ebeling Road, not far from the Bruce Township Fire Department.

“It is particularly heartbreaking when a preventable crash occurs on a holiday,” F/Lt. Mike Shaw said in a news release. “It is even worse when a child loses their life.”

Investigators said the male driver of a 2011 Chevy Impala was traveling south on M-53 with his 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter when he crossed into the northbound lanes and crashed head-on with a 2013 Chevy Impala.
