Up to 10 centimetres of snow could hit Toronto overnight and into Sunday while residents outside the GTA face a weekend of shovelling with up to 70 centimetres of snow falling in some areas.

Significant snow and strong winds are predicted for the city, Environment Canada said in special weather advisory issued Saturday night. Between five cm and 10 cm of snowfall is expected to begin late Saturday, with a low of -1 C.

The snow will taper off Sunday morning but strong southwest winds will pick up with gusts up to 70 km/h. Travel conditions are expected to be challenging.

The weather agency said the snow will mix with rain through Sunday morning, making roads and walkways tricky to navigate, and advised of possible utility outages.
