IONIA, Mich. (WILX) -VFW members completed their two-year mission to preserve the 21st Regiment Battle Flag.
In 1862, 18 counties in Michigan joined together to form the 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment, based in Ionia. The flag was created by the Ladies of Ionia.
The banner was carried during 13 different battles and returned with the regiment to Ionia in July 1865.
Over the last two years, Ionia VFW members worked to return the flag from its patched state back to its original battle-torn look.
Eric Calley, VFW post commander of Muir Lions, spoke on the meaning of having the flag back in Ionia.
