There was a sense of delight rippling around Strichen's churchgoers when the village's new organist arrived back in 1962.

Little did they know however of the harrowing journey he had taken to get to Aberdeenshire , or the secrets of his dark past.

Walter Hamböck had previously played piano for the Nazis in Germany before escaping a concentration camp and fleeing to the north-east .

Now, for the first time, his remarkable story is being told in his own words, after his diaries were discovered, writes the Daily Record .
