Four people were killed and ten others injured during a shooting at a family gathering in Stockton, California, on Saturday evening. The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. at a banquet hall located in a strip mall, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
Heather Brent, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed that the victims included both children and adults. Early reports suggest that the shooting may have been a targeted attack. "This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and information remains limited," Brent stated during a press conference.
Authorities are still searching for the suspected shooter, who remains at large. Detectives are working to determine a motive for the shooting. San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas urged anyone with information to come forward. "If you have any information as to this individual, reach out immediately. If you are this individual, turn yourself in immediately," he said.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, especially during the Thanksgiving weekend, a time typically reserved for family gatherings and celebrations. "Unfortunately tonight, heaven is a little bigger with the individuals, children and adults that unfortunately did not make it," she said. Fugazi described the shooting as "unacceptable" and emphasized that "Stockton is better than this."
The mayor also reflected on a previous shooting in the city that resulted in multiple fatalities, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence. "Families should be together instead of at the hospital, standing next to their loved one, praying that they survive," she added.
As of now, authorities have not released further details regarding the conditions of the injured victims, but several were reported to have been taken to local hospitals. Stockton is located approximately 40 miles south of Sacramento and has a population of around 320,000 residents. The investigation into the shooting continues as officials seek to provide answers to the community.
