TriMet will cut evening service on five Portland bus lines starting Monday as part of its plan to close a $300 million budget gap.
The agency has already eliminated 68 positions, laid off 26 people, instituted a hiring freeze and cut discretionary spending.
Ridership fell nearly 60% at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, from about 97 million rides in fiscal year 2019 to 40 million in 2021. The 2025 fiscal year’s ridership of about 65 million was a third below 2019’s figure.
