A winter storm is expected to bring snow, rain, and hazardous travel to parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania on Tuesday, according to a National Weather Service briefing issued Sunday, Nov. 30.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Sussex County in New Jersey, and Carbon and Monroe counties in Pennsylvania, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible beginning early Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said in its latest update.

Forecasters said snow could fall at rates of 1 inch per hour, creating dangerous conditions during both the morning and evening commutes in the southern Poconos and northwest New Jersey.

Areas northwest of I-95 and into the I-78 corridor, including parts of eastern Pennsylvania along with northern and central New Jersey, could see 1 to 4 inches of snow before a change to rain by Tuesday afternoon, the briefing said. Roads in these locations may become slick during the early commute.

Along the I-95 and New Jersey Turnpike corridors, which include Trenton and Philadelphia, snowfall is expected to remain at 1 inch or less, with a quick changeover to rain by mid-morning. The National Weather Service noted that confidence is high these areas will not see major snowfall.

Rainfall totals between 0.75 and 1.5 inches are forecast across the region by Tuesday night, with the heaviest amounts near the coast. No flooding concerns are expected at this time, according to the briefing.

Forecasters also warn of gale-force wind gusts Tuesday night across the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay, with seas building 5 to 8 feet.
