TAOS, N.M. —
Carson National Forest fire crews are preparing to begin pile burning near Taos Ski Valley and Hopewell Lake this week.
Crews will evaluate conditions December 1 for potential burns to begin December 2. Timing will depend on wind, weather, fuel moisture and required approvals.
Along the Highway 150 corridor, piles from 156 acres of forest thinning remain, stretching from Lower Hondo Campground to Taos Ski Valley and up the Wheeler Peak Trail to Bull of the Woods Meadow.
This work, part of the Wildland Urban Interface Project, addresses insect and disease risks and reduces potential fuel for wildfires along the only road in and out of Taos Ski Valley.
