A few weeks ago, a girl in my daughter’s first-grade class had a birthday. When birthdays arrive, the honored child provides cupcakes for all the people in the class. In long-ago days, a home-centered parent would make the cupcakes. Today, most cupcakes come in plastic containers straight from the grocery store.

This birthday girl asked if her mom had dropped them by the office. My daughter went straightaway to pick them up, thinking that most likely there would be nothing there. She was sadly correct in her thinking, so she stopped by the nurse’s office and asked her to please go get some cupcakes for this child’s birthday. Later, the cupcakes were delivered from the office.
