OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The case against Eswin Mejia — the man charged in connection to a 2016 crash that killed 21-year-old Sarah Root — is set for pretrial Monday.
Mejia, 29, was formally charged in Douglas County with one count of motor vehicle homicide-DUI and one count of failure to appear in court in March.
Mejia was due in court in April, but his public defender waived the hearing. The case then headed to district court and Mejia remained in jail on a $100 million bond.
Authorities say Mejia, an illegal immigrant, was street racing on Jan. 31, 2016 while under the influence of alcohol when he struck Root’s vehicle. Root, who was from Council Bluffs, died at the scene.
