CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is preparing southern Illinois motorists for winter weather expected on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

IDOT will be out working throughout Monday and into Tuesday on areas where frozen precipitation hits.

Statewide, IDOT has nearly 1,900 trucks and equipment available to manage snow and respond to weather emergencies across more than 45,000 lane miles. Officials urge drivers not to crowd the plows and to give them ample room to operate safely.

Motorists should drive cautiously, reducing speed and increasing braking distances. It's important to be especially careful at intersections, ramps, bridges, and shaded areas prone to icing.
