A three-day celebration will be raising festive spirits to the max this week when Durham's Christmas Festival gets under way. Following on from the switch-on of the city's Christmas lights and with the Gala Theatre panto in full swing , the festival promises another seasonal treat.

The annual event, which launches on Friday, is always a highlight of the calendar, bringing another welcome blast of colour after the lights have faded from recent dazzling autumn attractions Luxmuralis , inside Durham Cathedral, and the last ever Lumiere which this November was enjoyed by 120,000 visitors over its three-night run .
