HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - Violent online predator groups are targeting teenagers across Connecticut, using manipulation and extortion to gain control over victims, according to FBI officials.

The groups, which include one called “764,” operate through gaming platforms and social media apps to befriend vulnerable teens before exploiting them, said PJ O’Brien, FBI Special Agent in Charge in New Haven.

“It’s a very horrendous intersection of domestic terrorism and crimes against children,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien described the groups as sadistic and nihilistic, with members who get pleasure from causing pain and believe life is worthless. He said tens of thousands of people belong to these networks nationwide.
