On Dec. 1, 2025, the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper received a proclamation celebrating its 130 years of journalistic excellence and service to the community. The special resolution passed by Indianapolis’ City-County Council recognized the civic impact of more than a century of courageous and diverse reporting by the Recorder.

From its inception in 1895, the Recorder sought to use its voice to inform and promote issues affecting the Black community locally and nationally. In a time when many diverse communities were being misrepresented, the Recorder was steadfast in its mission to be a voice for Indianapolis.
