Authorities identify New Orleans man who died while in custody at Jefferson Parish jail

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office has identified the inmate who died while in custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

Kelvin Maxie, 68, of New Orleans, was pronounced dead Nov. 27 at the jail in Gretna.

An autopsy was conducted Monday, but Maxie's cause of death has not yet been determined, according to Coroner's Office. Further testing is required, but the office said that there were no signs for trauma or foul play.

Maxie had been in custody at the jail since Nov. 21 when he was arrested as a fugitive from another jurisdiction, according to Capt. Jason Rivarde, a spokesperson for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. No details were available about which jurisdiction sought his arrest or for what charge.

Deputies at the Gretna jail were conducting security checks ab
