WESTLAKE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect accused of stabbing a man was shot by a Los Angeles police detective in the Westlake District on Tuesday, according to the police department.

Police said it started when a plainclothes detective for LAPD saw a felony assault with a deadly weapon in progress around 11 a.m. in the area of Alvarado Street and Olympic Boulevard, about three blocks south of MacArthur Park.

The detective intervened, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was shot and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The man that the suspect reportedly attacked had multiple stab wounds and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, LAPD said.

Police said a knife was recovered at the scene.
