STATEWIDE, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) released new statistics saying that the number of conflicts between bears and people is at its highest level statewide since 2019.

Between January 1 and December 1, CPW said it received 5,256 bear reports, compared to 4,996 by the same time last year.

According to CPW, bear sightings and conflicts have been rising steadily over the past few years. They said this is the highest total since 2019, when 5,392 reports were made. That was the same year CPW said it launched its digital report tracking system.

Every year, wildlife officials say a majority of incident reports involve bears attempting to get into human food sources. People are asked to secure food, including pet and bird food, away from where bears can find it.
