ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - A pedestrian bridge that has carried students to Mary Daly Elementary and West Side Middle School for 54 years will be demolished at the end of the school year due to deterioration and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance issues.
Approximately 300 students cross the bridge over State Road 19 daily. Elkhart officials met with concerned residents Tuesday night at Mary Daly Elementary to discuss the bridge’s future.
The bridge connecting the two schools has reached the end of its lifespan, according to city officials. Elkhart director of communications Alex Otto said the bridge cannot be repaired because it does not comply with ADA standards.
