One of the highest honors Michigan can give to a person or group is renaming a highway after them for residents and visitors to see.

All across the state there are highways and bridges commemorating first responders and service members who gave their lives in the line of duty, historical figures and groups, groups of veterans and more.

It’s an honor that’s often requested of lawmakers, but not all rise to the same level of state or national significance to have it bestowed.

State Sen. Veronica Klinefelt, D-Eastpointe, who chairs the Veterans and Emergency Services and Local Government committees, said she’s had requests to rename highways after businesses, government employees not in public safety, clergy members and veterans who later died of natural causes.
