A woman was killed in a violent single-vehicle crash on Long Island, police announced on Wednesday, Dec. 3. 

Ruth Ellerd, 66, of Ridge, was driving a 2017 Honda HRV southbound on Rocky Point Yaphank Road, about a half-mile north of Whiskey Road in Rocky Point, when her vehicle suddenly left the roadway and hit a tree on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at approximately 8:50 p.m., detectives said.

She was transported by Rocky Point Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to the release. 

The Honda was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
