New York state could implement a new points system for driving violations next year, according to reports by WHAM and WHEC-News 10 .
These changes, which would increase the amount of points given with moving violations, could go into effect early in 2026, according to the reports.
Currently, drivers who accrue 11 violation points within an 18-month period could face a suspended license, according to the NY DMV .
Under the changes, a driver’s license could be suspended if they accumulate 10 points in a 24-month period, WHEC reported.
In addition, several offenses will give a driver more points on their license, according to WHEC. Speeding 10 mph over the limit will increase from three points to four points. Using a phone or electronic device while driving will be six points instea
