ANN ARBOR — Michigan has already had a pair of extended breaks this season thanks to a rare nonconference game in February (against Duke) and playing three games over Thanksgiving week. The Wolverines are on hiatus now: They last played on Nov. 26 and won’t take the court again until Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Rutgers.

At the top of Dusty May’s to-do list for a long week of practice: transition defense.

Michigan wasn’t bad in that area during last week’s Players Era Championship in Las Vegas. When you win all three games by a combined 110 points, it’s hard to find many faults. May’s comment speaks more to Michigan’s excellent half-court defense. Opponents are shooting a shade under 37% inside the arc, making Michigan’s 2-point defense the best in the country.
