A 17-year-old from Calgary faces multiple charges after allegedly using artificial intelligence to sexualize images of teenage girls from various local high schools. The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team's Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit initiated the investigation in October following a tip about child sexual abuse materials being shared on social media. On November 13, authorities executed a search warrant at the teen's residence, where they seized two cellphones, a tablet, and a laptop. The investigation revealed that the accused used AI technology to create explicit representations of girls under 18. To protect the victims' identities, police have not disclosed the names of the accused or the schools involved. The victims are receiving support services. The teen has been charged with making, possessing, and distributing child sexual abuse and exploitation materials, as well as criminal harassment. Staff Sgt. Mark Auger of ALERT ICE explained, "In the Criminal Code, child sexual abuse and exploitation material includes photos, videos, and any visual representation of someone under the age of 18, or who is depicted as being under the age of 18, and is engaged in explicit sexual activity." As of October 10, the term "child pornography" has been replaced in Canada’s Criminal Code with "child sexual abuse and exploitation material." Auger emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "What teens need to realize is that creating these images and sharing deep fakes is considered an extreme form of bullying and a criminal offense, and we will take action against it." The accused has been released under several court-ordered conditions. These include prohibitions on contacting individuals aged 16 or younger, except in incidental situations related to work or school, and restrictions on possessing any electronics capable of accessing the internet. The next court appearance for the teen is scheduled for January 8, 2026.
