Fifty years ago, seatbelts were relatively new and station wagons were more common on Canadian roads than SUVs. But what hasn’t changed is one woman’s lasting presence at Sydney Street and Third Street East in Cornwall.

As she prepares for retirement, a ceremony on Wednesday showed that Rose Durley will have a permanent presence where families and young residents have come to know her for generations.

Durley was commemorated with a plaque unveiling and a small ceremony just south of Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS). Family, friends, city officials and well-wishers gathered together during cold December noon-hour to honour the woman who has ensured kids arrive to school safely for years.
