The Trump administration has halted immigration applications from 19 countries.
A Dec. 2 U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services memo placed a hold on countries previously listed in a June travel ban proclamation. The memo specifically mentions the Nov. 26 shooting in D.C. that left one National Guard member dead and one in critical condition as contributing to the pause.
The Trump administration has already stepped up immigration restrictions on people from Afghanistan, one of the 19 countries listed, since an Afghan national was identified as the suspect in the shooting. Also listed in Tuesday's memo is Somalia, which Trump has singled out in recent days, saying "we don't want them in our country."
What countries will be impacted by the recent order? Here is what we know:

Afghanistan immigration already under review following DC shooting
The immigration application pause comes after the Nov. 26 shooting of two National Guard members near the White House. The suspect has been identified as an Afghan national who came to the U.S. in 2021, and Homeland Security has said it would review all asylum cases approved under the Biden administration.
One of the victims, U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died on Nov. 27. The other victim, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains "fighting for his life."
Lakanwal was shot shortly after the attack and is hospitalised. He has been charged with murder, assault with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
Homeland Security has said it would review all asylum cases approved under the Biden administration.
