Ukrainian negotiators are set to meet with U.S. officials in Florida on Thursday. This meeting follows a significant discussion between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. A senior administration official confirmed that Rustem Umerov, the secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, will be present. Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, is also expected to attend the meeting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Wednesday that preparations for further discussions are in progress. However, he did not specify when these talks would take place. "We’re preparing meetings in the United States -- after the American team returns from Moscow and following the relevant consultations in Washington -- Rustem Umerov, Andrii Hnatov, along with the rest of the negotiating team, will continue discussions with envoys of President Trump," Zelenskyy stated on social media.
Details from the five-hour meeting between Witkoff, Kushner, and Putin remain limited. However, comments from both Washington and Moscow after the talks were largely optimistic. Both sides recognized that additional efforts are necessary to reach a deal that would satisfy both Kyiv and Moscow. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that while some terms were deemed "unacceptable" by Putin, others were acceptable to Moscow.
President Trump characterized the meeting as a "reasonably good meeting," adding that Witkoff and Kushner conveyed their impression that Putin is interested in ending the conflict. The upcoming discussions in Florida are anticipated to build on the outcomes of the recent high-stakes meeting in Moscow.
