CAYCE, S.C. (WIS) - Leaders in Cayce have hired a new city attorney.

The city announced that James Smith was appointed to the role after a vote by the Cayce City Council on Tuesday.

“I’m deeply grateful for the confidence and support of the Cayce City Council. I look forward to working closely with City Manager Mike Conley, Mayor Elise Partin, and Council in service to our citizens and in support of the continued progress of the City of Cayce.”

He was first elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1996 and spent over 20 years in the State House. Smith’s tenure also included time on the state House Judiciary Committee.

Smith left office in 2018 when he launched his campaign for governor, later falling to Gov. Henry McMaster in that year’s election.
