The National Weather Service has forecast Fort Wayne's low temperature will be 2 degrees for Thursday.
If the prediction is correct, the city will break the former record low of 4 degrees measured in 1976.
Officials with the utilities that provide northeast Indiana homes with water, electricity and natural gas issued some advice today on how to stay safe and reduce utility bills during frigid weather.
Fort Wayne City Utilities advised homeowners to take the following precautions to protect our pipes from freezing.
• Keep garage doors closed to retain heat and protect your water meter and home.
• Run a small trickle of lukewarm water to keep water flowing and help prevent pipes from freezing.
• Open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes under sinks.
