Florian Wirtz was cruelly denied his first Liverpool goal in the Reds’ 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland.

The £116million summer signing thought he had picked the perfect moment to net his first goal for the club with Regis Le Bris’ side closing in on a famous victory.

The Germany international produced some nice footwork before finding the net by way of a deflection of Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele.

At first glance it appeared that Wirtz had finally broken his long duck in a Liverpool shirt, but replays quickly took the shine of the Reds’ leveller.

Wirtz’s shot was sailing off target until the deflection off Mukiele took the ball goalwards and past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
