The death of a 40-year-old who was gunned down by his girlfriend's son over the summer in Maryland has been ruled a homicide, authorities announced.
Silver Spring resident Julian Rogers, 20, is facing murder and other charges following the deadly shooting involving Derrick Jones over the summer, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.
Officers were called shortly before 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, to investigate reports of shots fired in the 30 block of Hunters Gate Court in Silver Spring, where they found Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
First responders rendered aid and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died at a rehabilitation facility on Sunday, Sept. 28.
According to investigators, Jones advised detectives that Rogers — his girlfriend's son — had shot him, leading to a short-lived search that led to his arrest and the recovery of a 9mm privately manufactured firearm with an extended magazine and a live round in the chamber.
Rogers was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he was charged with attempted second-degree murder and related offenses.
Following his death, Jones' body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, and on Wednesday, Dec. 3, the department announced that his death was ruled a homicide.
Officials said that now, "the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office will review the case and determine whether to pursue a superseding indictment charging Rogers with first-degree murder."
