A family’s trip through Spotsylvania County has turned tragic after one of the victims hurt in a three-vehicle crash on I-95 died from her injuries, Virginia State Police said.
A 2018 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Isis J. Torres Ramirez, 48, of Lutz, Florida, was heading south when it hydroplaned on wet roads, Virginia State Police said.
The SUV went off the left side of the interstate, hit the guardrail, spun back into traffic, and struck a 2020 Toyota Highlander.
State Police said the Highlander was then hit from behind by a 2019 Volvo tractor-trailer.
Three members of the same family were inside the Highlander.
Andrea Vernot, 64, suffered serious injuries and died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at an area hospital, state police confirmed.
Mark A. Vernot, 61, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. The driver, Matthew J. Vernot, 31, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was not hurt.
State Police said everyone inside the Highlander was wearing a seatbelt.
Torres Ramirez and the tractor-trailer driver were not injured, according to Virginia State Police.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
