HAWKINSVILLE, Ga. — A beloved burger restaurant in Central Georgia has reopened after temporarily closing so one of its longtime cooks could begin chemotherapy treatment, with co-workers and customers rallying around her during her battle against cancer.
The Grill , a fixture on Commerce Street since the late 1930s, shuttered its doors briefly to support Denise Moses, who has served customers at the mom-and-pop establishment for seven years.
"This is the oldest restaurant in town. It's been here since the late 30s," said Paula Nixon, Moses' cooking partner and longtime friend.
The news of Moses' diagnosis came unexpectedly.
"She called me and she said, 'It's cancer.' So we both kind of fell apart together on the phone, but we're gonna work it out," Nixon said.
