The newly installed Lafayette City Council voted Tuesday night to name Saul Tapia Vega as mayor and Tim Barnes as mayor pro tem, effective immediately.
Lafayette’s mayor and mayor pro tem are selected by the council from among its own members to serve two-year terms. Tapia Vega won the mayoral seat in a 4-2 vote, and Barnes won the mayor pro tem seat in a 4-2 vote. There is no swearing-in process for the mayor and mayor pro tem seats. Tapia Vega and Barnes took those roles at Tuesday night’s meeting following the votes.
Barnes was nominated for mayor by Councilmember David Fridland. Tapia Vega was nominated for mayor by Councilmember Crystal Gallegos. After the mayor vote, Fridland and Councilmembers Annmarie Jensen and Adam Gianola nominated Barnes for mayor pro tem. Tapia Vega nominate
