SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A Spokane family is suing over the death of their son, claiming that employees at the Spokane County Jail ignored his pleas for help and watched television as he slowly died in his cell.

The lawsuit details that 26-year-old Spencer Wirth collapsed in his mother's home on Dec. 2, 2023, days after being hit by a car. His mother, despite knowing that Wirth was wanted for assault, called 911.

"No ambulance came. The police arrived," said Colin Prince, the Wirth family's attorney.

He says Wirth wasn't immediately booked into jail, but instead sent to the emergency room at Multicare Deaconess Hospital. Prince says Wirth's heart was racing 130 beats a minute, he had trouble breathing, low blood pressure and dizziness.
