Attacks against the Somali Community are nothing new.
On a campaign stop in Minnesota two days before the 2016 election, then-Republican nominee for president Donald Trump said this about Somalis.
“Here in Minnesota, you've seen firsthand the problems caused with faulty refugee vetting. With large numbers of Somali refugees coming into your state without your knowledge, without your support or approval, and with some of them then joining ISIS and spreading their extremist views all over our country and all over the world,” Trump said.
In both of his presidential terms, he’s implemented a travel ban to Somalia. In November, he ended temporary protection status for Somalis. In December, the Trump administration paused asylum applications from 19 countries, including Somalia.
