President Trump’s pardon of the former Honduran president for running a drug trafficking operation into the United States raises, to an extent that can’t be ignored anymore, the question whether there is any consistent principle other than to reward personal loyalty and score political points.
Last week, Trump set aside the 45-year sentence on drug trafficking for former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez. Federal prosecutors had said Hernandez struck the pose of an anti-drug conservative but ran his nation like a narco state with a “cocaine superhighway” into the United States. A jury agreed.
