A woman who has claimed Universal Credit for the last six years says work "simply isn’t worth it". Erica Crompton says her story shows she is better off claiming benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions, or DWP , than having wages taxed away.
Erica told the Telegraph newspaper she signed onto the DWP beneftis system back in 2009, while on minimum wage and with her mmental health spiralling. Erica says she initially received Jobseeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit.
She would go on to be transferred to Universal Credit in 2019. She now pockets £1,027 a month, which includes £381 rent on a shared ownership property and £200 for caring over 35 hours a week for her partner who uses a wheelchair.
