JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A Jackson family is pushing federal legislation that would require tech companies to share user data with law enforcement and parents when someone 21 or younger goes missing.
The proposal comes more than three years after Jimmie “Jay” Lee was kidnapped and killed in Oxford.
His Ole Miss classmate, Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., pleaded guilty to second degree murder and tampering with evidence.
On Tuesday, Herrington was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
During a press conference following the sentencing, Jimmie Lee Sr., Jay Lee’s father, said tech companies refused to turn over cellphone data in a timely manner during the investigation.
“Sometimes when they (investigators) need answers they have to reach out to different companies, to find answers,” Lee said.
